Soil Loss in the Holland Marsh
Study Area
The Holland Marsh is located in Ontario, approximately half way between Toronto and Barrie. The marsh is highly productive agricultural land that was cleared in the late 1920’s. It is farmed extensively, producing large quantities of carrots, onions, and Asian vegetables. The Holland River flows through the marsh into Lake Simcoe to the North. Soil loss is a significant issue in the river and has direct impacts on the surrounding farmland.
Project Goal
The goal of the project was to use historical orthoimagery of the Holland Marsh to assess erosion along the banks of the Holland River to aid in the creation of remediation and maintenance recommendations.
Project Deliverables
• Historical Orthoimagery Analysis
• Detailed Maps of Holland Marsh
• Animated Portrayal of Soil Loss Over Time
• Steps/Priorities for Remediation
• Final Report and Presentation
